Nemak collaborates with ITESM students on innovation projects

At Nemak, we constantly seek collaboration with local schools and universities to involve students with our products and processes at an early stage and foster a culture of innovation and new ideas.

An example of that is a recent collaboration with students from ITESM in Monterrey, Mexico. The engineering students are participating in a 16-week innovation project, which, due to the COVID-19 contingency, is being supervised remotely by Nemak engineers.

Taking advantage of several online collaboration and innovation platforms, the students have been able to understand some of Nemak’s needs and develop impactful solutions that deliver value to the company by trying to solve some of our current challenges:

  1. Eliminating restrictions for dedicated lines and reduce changeover time on core assembly lines.
  2. Reducing CO2 emissions (Carbon Footprint), avoiding cooling areas outside of the plant by modifying the de-coring process.
  3. Reducing core blower sub-utilization by implementing an operation system for sand cores production and handling.

Last week, the students presented their ideas to Nemak’s BU Block Plant Management team and ITESM’s Mechanics & Advanced Materials team and received feedback to continue developing the proposed solutions.

Congratulations to all the teams on their projects!
